Car Rental
Considerations and Car Hire advice
Check rental car
condition.
Always check the condition of the vehicle before you take possession. Ensure
that the car hire representative accompanies you during this inspection and that
they accurately note ANY damage or scratches. You could be liable for
pre-existing damage on vehicle return.
Car hire duration
ALL car hire is for a 24 hour period. If you have free mileage and time to spare
- drive drive drive! You get no discount for returning the vehicle early. Also
allow time for vehicle return inspect time. It is inadvisable to attempt to
return a car five minutes prior to the office closing.
Fuel
Most companies adopt a policy of returning vehicles with a full tank of fuel.
Failure to do so can lead to refueling charges, often at significantly higher
fuel costs than obtainable at regular fuel stations.
Insurance
Check the insurance conditions at vehicle pickup. Some car hire companies put a
'hold' on your credit card in case of damage. This could be very inconvenient if
you cannot pay for some aspect of your holiday because your credit card has
"reached its limit". Also check your personal car insurance and your
travel insurance. Many policies cover hire car insurance and it is easy to inadvertently
double up on insurance. Always take out Collision-Damage Waiver/Loss-Damage
Waiver insurance if it is not covered in other policies.
Taxes and Airport
Charges
Airports often impose local taxes and surcharges on car rental companies. Rental
companies may also charge a fee called a “concession recoup fee”. This
covers the costs of operating an airport office. These are also reasons to check
into renting from agency locations outside of the airport areas.
